Parents go to party next door. leaving six month old baby alone at home. Baby goes missing. Who is the kidnapper? Where is the baby? THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR is an outstanding debut psychological thriller novel from author Shari Lapen!
Marco and Anne are invited to a dinner party at the home of their next door neighbours Cynthia and Graham. They get a baby sitter for their baby daughter Cora. The sitter on the day of the dinner party cancels at the last minute. Anne really did not want to go to the party so she tell Marco that she will stay home with baby Cora. Marco somehow convinces her that they can both still go to the dinner party. All they have to do is every half hour one of them will go home and check on Cora, and they will also take the baby monitor. They stay later than Anne wanted to and when she goes to check on baby Cora the crib is empty. The police immediately suspect that one or both of them are involved in the disappearance of Cora. As they investigated they soon discover that both of them have secrets that they are not telling each other. Each time that I thought that I had figure out who took baby Cora I was wrong. Every chapter of this book brought more twists and turns. That kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is not to be missed.
I loved this book. It grabbed my attention from the very first page, held on tight and wouldn’t let me go until the very last. I was completely enthralled by all the twists and turns, secrets and lies and some delicious family dynamics specifically between Marco and his in-laws. Pacing was also excellent throughout. The action was high octane most of the way through but there were calmer moments throughout which I was grateful for as they gave me chance to catch my breath before starting off again. So many lies, betrayals and cover ups in this novel. How well do you know the people closest to you? This book maintained the suspense so elegantly. The reveal in the end is beyond words. Also a grip maintained throughout the story which is wonderful. I am not going to say anymore as I don’t want to give the plot away, but this is a very riveting and powerful story
A page-turner, fast-paced, engrossing, action-packed, easy & entertaining read. An engaging book with enough twists and turns to keep you hooked. Raw emotions of the distraught parents were depicted so real. The way the culprit keeps cool and continues to improvise the out-of-control events is very thrilling. Mouth-gaping shocking twists in between. Characters were especially well defined and thus easy to connect to / emote with although, truth be told, apart from Rasbach, I didn’t really like any of them! Plotting was excellent and very well executed. As with most books of this genre, it gets a bit convoluted, but it was easy to follow, made sense and so I never got lost.
I believe that this is a new genre for this author. If this is the quality for her first effort, I really can’t wait to see what she serves up next time.
I kept flipping the pages as I had to know what had happened. I loved it. All I can say is read this book, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
My rating : 4/5
